Two conversations on addressing strategies for reconstructing exhibitions and historic ways of looking at art, plus the question of how design helps us to look at and be with art. With Dirk van den Heuvel (Jaap Bakema Study Centre/Het Nieuwe Instituut), Penelope Curtis (Calouste Gulbenkian Museum), Wouter Davidts (art and architecture historian), Guus Beumer (director of Het Nieuwe Instituut) and Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli (architect, designer of exhibitions and partner of OMA).
Together with the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Het Nieuwe Instituut is organizing an afternoon about (re-)making exhibitions. These conversations will open the exhibition Art on Display 1949-1969 and is part of the extra programme of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, The Poetics of Reason.
Art on Display 1949-69
The exhibition Art on Display 1949-69 reconstructs 1:1 six iconic exhibition designs by architects Alison and Peter Smithson, Franco Albini, Lina Bo Bardi, Carlo Scarpa and Aldo van Eyck. Different ways of looking at art are placed next to each other and feed the debate about the public role and meaning of art in a democratizing society.
The exhibition is on show in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum from 8 November 2019 until 2 March 2020. It will also be shown at Het Nieuwe Instituut in the summer of 2020.
Dirk van den Heuvel
Dirk van den Heuvel is an associate professor at TU Delft with the chair of Architectural Design and Dwelling. He is the co-founder and head of the Jaap Bakema Study Centre at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, the joint research initiative of TU Delft and Het Nieuwe Instituut.
Penelope Curtis is director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and was previously director of Tate Britain where she oversaw the Caruso St John Millbank project. She has written on Modern architecture, including the work of Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, and Patio and Pavilion (Ridinghouse/Getty 2007) and is the co-curator of Art on Display at the Gulbenkian.
Wouter Davidts lives and works in Antwerp. He teaches at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Department of Art, Music and Theatre Studies of Ghent University (UGent). He has published widely on the museum, contemporary art and architecture.
Guus Beumer, who studied social sciences, has been director of Het Nieuwe Instituut since January 2013. In the 1980s Beumer was a journalist for publications including Avenue, Marie Claire and HP/De Tijd and in the 1990s was art director of the fashion labels orson + bodil and SO. From 2005 he was director of Marres, House for Contemporary Culture and Bureau Europa/NAiM, both in Maastricht.
Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli
Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli joined OMA in 2007 and became a partner in 2014. Ippolito’s work at OMA/AMO focuses on research and curation, scenography and preservation. Pestellini holds a Master of Architecture degree from the Politecnico di Milano. He teaches at the Royal College of Arts in London and at TU Delft in the Netherlands.
